Team Thomas used a three-RBI day from Christian Overstreet and a solid pitching performance from freshman J.C. Casey for a 6-3 win to even the Missouri State baseball Fall World Series at one game apiece Thursday afternoon.
Overstreet knocked a two-run single as part of a three-run first to give Team Thomas the early advantage, and drew a bases loaded walk to end a 12-pitch at bat for his third RBI in the fifth. Freshman Tyler Ryun finished 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly in the second, and also struck out four batters in two innings in relief of Casey.
Casey went five strong innings in the start, scattering four hits and fanning five batters against one walk while allowing an unearned run. Matt Frevert pitched the final two frames and struck out three as the Team Thomas pitching staff totaled 12 strikeouts in the game.
Ben Woodbury also recorded a pair of hits and Adam Maddox added a sac fly for Team Thomas.
For Team Mattson, Josh Mazzola finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a triple and an RBI. Curt Courtwright had a two-hit day and an RBI single in the ninth, and Aaron Conway added two hits as well. On the mound, Brant Combs threw three perfect innings of relief with three strikeouts.
Game three of the series is Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. at Hammons Field.
