The Missouri State women's soccer team scored two goals in the first 10 minutes and never looked back, as the Bears defeated the University of Tennessee-Martin, 4-1, Friday in Martin, Tenn. Junior Kate Blair, seniors Chelsea Anderson and Kate Hercules, and sophomore Jenna Laughlin all scored first half goals for the Bears, who improve to 2-2 with the win. Tennessee-Martin falls to 0-3 on the season.
Blair got the Bears on the scoreboard in the sixth minute, heading a Caroline Rooker corner kick past UT-M goalkeeper Cara Sullivan. Anderson scored what proved to be the game winner less than four minutes later, taking a pass from Blair and firing a shot from the middle of the box. Hercules put the Bears up 3-0 in the 26th minute on an assist from sophomore Laura Galati. Laughlin finished the scoring less than five minutes later in the 30th minute to give the Bears a 4-0 halftime lead.
Missouri State outshot Tennessee-Martin 16-1 in the first half, allowing the Bears to empty their bench and give their young players a chance to see playing time in the second half. Tennessee-Martin's lone score came in the 78th minute on a Sarah Singleton goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Jasper picked up the win between the pipes. For the match, the Bears outshot UT-M 24-6, including seven shots and a goal from the non-starters.
"We came out really focused and put a lot of pressure on Tennessee-Martin, which was critical to our fast start," said Bears' head coach Rob Brewer. "We were able to play a lot of people and stay fresh. This game allowed us to develop new players and give them some playing experience."
The Bears will travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo., to take on Southeast Missouri State in a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, Sept. 3.
