Volleyball receives two commitments

Missouri State volleyball coach Melissa Stokes announced the signing of two Missouri high school standouts Wednesday. Maci Wood and Cara Hackmann each committed to the Bears and will be freshmen during the 2007 season.

A native of Preston, Mo., Wood is a three-sport star at Skyline/Hickory County high in Urbana. The 5-11 middle and outside hitter was an all-state selection her junior and senior seasons and earned all-conference and all-district nods each of the past three seasons. She set the school record for kills her sophomore year and improved on that number each of her final two seasons, finishing the 2006 campaign with 402. She finished her high school career with over 1,000 kills and 300 blocks.

"Maci is a great athlete with great speed and jumping ability," Coach Stokes said of Wood. "She has all the tools we like to have in a new player and we are excited to get her in the gym and train her to become a great volleyball player."

Hackmann comes to MSU from Washington, Mo., where she is a senior at St. Francis Borgia High. A 6-0 middle hitter, Hackmann led the Knights to a 124-25-4 record during her four seasons. Her team won the Class 3 state title her sophomore year and finished second in her junior campaign. The three-time all-state pick earned first team honors in 2006 and 2005 and second-team accolades as a sophomore. She totaled 318 kills and 274 digs as a senior and 421 kills and 325 digs as a junior.

"Cara comes in playing volleyball at a very high level. She is very technically sound in every aspect of her game and has a very high volleyball IQ. I believe she will make an immediate impact in our program," said Stokes.

The Bears are 23-6 this season and bidding to become the second program in history to record 1,000 victories. MSU will reach the milestone with its next victory. Missouri State is the defending MVC Tournament champion and made the NCAA Tournament two of the last three seasons and five times overall.
