Missouri State’s volleyball team picked up a 3-0 sweep of Belmont University Saturday evening at Hammons Student Center in front of a crowd of 2,632 fans, the fifth largest home crowd in MSU history. Scores in favor of the Bears were 30-25, 30-20 and 30-28.
MSU improved to 18-6 while Belmont dropped to 19-6.
The Bears trailed only one time but never led by more than five in an evenly matched 30-25 game one victory. MSU took advantage of 10 Bruin attack errors and three service errors to earn the win, despite Belmont owning a 15-14 lead in kills.
Like game one, Missouri State trailed just once in the second game, 2-1, and jumped out to a 17-7 lead before cruising to a 30-20 win. Four MSU players finished with three kills in the period, and the Bears had five service aces, including two each from Katelyn Panzau and Jamie Adams. Adams had just one ace on the season before the match. Panzau recorded her 1,000th assist of the season during the game, feeding Sarah Lansing for the final kill of the game to reach the milestone.
After Missouri State pulled out to a 15-9 lead in game three, Belmont fought back to tie it at 16-all. The final game was tied nine more times until the Bears took advantage of a BU ball-handling error and another attack error to take the match with a 30-28 game three score.
Adams led all players with 12 kills, and Erin O’Connor and Sara Thomas chipped in eight apiece for the Bears, who hit .159 for the match to Belmont’s .142.
Adeana McAfee and O’Connor joined Panzau and Adams with two aces each, and MSU finished with nine as a team to just one for the Bruins.
The Bears host Valparaiso at 2 p.m. Sunday in their final non-conference match of the regular season.
