Pat Talburt was recruited to MSU by Coach Orville Pottenger and came to the football Bears from Aurora, Missouri, in 1964 as a promising 260-pound offensive tackle, one of the first linemen of that size to join the MSU grid ranks. After gaining experience as a freshman his first year, Talburt was a regular at tackle as a sophomore in 1965, earning MIAA all-conference second team selection, as the Bears of first-year head coach Jim Mentis won seven of 10 games and finished second to Northeast Missouri State in the MIAA race. Talburt moved up to the all-conference first team as a junior in 1966 under Coach Mentis, and Talburt's blocking helped pave the way for the Bears to roll undefeated to the MIAA championship and advance to a post-season meeting against Adams State College in the Mineral Water Bowl in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. The Bears lost that post-season encounter and finished 7-4 for the 1966 season. Talburt was a regular at offensive tackle again during his senior year but his performance and playing time were limited by a shoulder injury suffered during the season. At the conclusion of his MSU playing days, Talburt signed a contact and played briefly with the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League.
