Bears Drop Tight CUSA Opener at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. - Host Delaware broke a scoreless deadlock in the 58th minute and held Missouri State off the board the rest of the way for a 1-0 win Sunday in the Bears' Conference USA opener at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Maggie Groh scored the game's only goal at the 57:44 mark off assists from Adiat Olaogun-Dickson and Willa Pratt to put the Blue Hens in front.
The Bears (3-6-1, 0-1-0 CUSA) finished even with the Blue Hens (6-2-3, 1-0-0 CUSA) at 10 shots apiece after carrying a 7-6 advantage into halftime. Kate Lewis made four saves for Missouri State, while Delaware goalkeeper Sophia Hall stopped two shots to secure the shutout.
Missouri State looked for an immediate response as Lillie Rasmussen sent an attempt wide less than a minute later. Maggie O'Keefe put the Bears' next chance on frame in the 63rd minute, but Hall made the save to preserve Delaware's advantage.
Jane Hansen added another attempt in the 68th minute, but the Blue Hens held Missouri State without a shot the rest of the way.
Delaware seized momentum after the intermission, earning five of its seven corner kicks in the second half after Missouri State owned a 6-2 advantage in corners through the opening 45 minutes.
The Bears controlled the early stages, recording the first six shots of the match while holding Delaware without a shot for nearly 25 minutes.
Hansen generated Missouri State's first opportunity in the fourth minute with a shot Hall turned away, then added another attempt moments later. Emma Shields, Rasmussen and Lily Patterson also created chances during the Bears' opening surge.
Missouri State's defense kept Delaware from generating sustained pressure early, with Gabby Riley recording the Blue Hens' first shot in the 25th minute. Lewis stopped Riley, Groh and Ava Agresti over a five-minute stretch to preserve the scoreless tie.
