Bears Throw Two-Hitter to Even Series at DBU
March 28, 2026 | Baseball
DALLAS – Owen Slater, Brock Lucas, Max Knight and Tyler Charlton combined to throw Missouri State's first two-hitter since May 2021, and the offense scored six runs in the final two innings Saturday at Horner Ballpark to even the series at Dallas Baptist with an 8-2 victory.
Â
DBU (15-12, 5-3 Conference USA) scored on an RBI single in the first and a double steal attempt in the third to build a 2-0 lead, while starter Jared Schaeffer carried a no-hitter in the fifth before the Mo State offense got rolling.
Â
Logan Fyffe's single broke up the no-hitter after Bobby Atkinson was hit by a pitch to set up Gabe Roessler's two-run double for a 2-2 tie at the midway point.
Â
Brock Lucas followed up Owen Slater's one-hit start by tossing 2.1 shutout innings, Max Knight (4-0) took over with 1.1 hitless frames, and Tyler Charlton followed suit while striking out three to complete the four-out save, his fourth of the season. The staff combined to strike out 10 DBU batters, and both Patriot hits were singles.
Â
The Bears (17-8, 6-2) threatened with multiple runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh frames before breaking through in the eighth, with Caden Bogenpohl leading off with a double, Carter Bergman following with a single, Bobby Atkinson hitting the go-ahead double and Logan Fyffe hitting a sacrifice fly for a 4-2 lead.
Â
Mo State then loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth on the way to four more runs, scoring on an Atkinson walk, Knight two-run single and Roessler squeeze for the 8-2 final.
Â
Bogenpohl out-hit DBU by himself with a 3-for-4 day at the plate while scoring twice, Bergman reached four times and scored twice, while Atkinson, Knight and Roessler all drove in multiple runs.
Â
Additionally, Knight registered a hit and a pitching appearance in the same game for the 20th time in his career.
Â
Bryce Cermenelli extended his hitting streak to 13 games, and Taeg Gollert's 66th career double moved him one away from tying Brayden Drake's career record and also bumped him into a tie for fourth in program history with102 extra-base hits.
Â
The rubber match is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
