Bears Overcome Seven-Run Deficit to Beat Ragin’ Cajuns

LAFAYETTE, La. – Missouri State rallied from a 10-3 deficit in the eighth inning Saturday to win 13-12 in 11 innings and secure the series win over Louisiana at M. L. Tigue Moore Field at Russo Park.

MoState's largest comeback victory since 2019 began with a five-run eighth inning, scoring on Charlie Carter's RBI double, Caden Bogenpohl's two-run single, a wild pitch and another RBI double from Bobby Atkinson to close the deficit to 10-8.

Max Knight (1-0) took over on the mound in the bottom of the eighth and tossed three scoreless frames with four strikeouts, and led off the ninth with a solo homer, marking the eighth time in his career pitching and homering in the same game. Jax Ryan followed with a double and scored the tying run on Gabe Roessler's two-out double for a 10-10 deadlock.

In the bottom of the ninth, Bryce Cermenelli threw out the winning run at home plate to send it to extra innings, then hit the go-ahead single in the 11th before Roessler added a two-run homer for a 13-10 lead.

The Ragin' Cajuns (0-2) loaded the bases with no outs in the 11th and pulled to 13-12 with a pair of sacrifice flies off Brock Lucas before a strikeout secured Lucas' second save in as many games.

The Bears (2-0) jumped ahead 2-0 in the third on a Taeg Gollert single, but Louisiana put together eight hits in the bottom half and scored five times.

The Cajuns added two more on a double in the fourth and made it 10-3 after seven innings, with Gollert's third RBI the only MoState run in the interim.

Missouri State used 13 position players and eight pitchers in a complete team effort, with Bogenpohl reaching safely five times and Roessler scoring four runs. Five Bears recorded multiple hits and nine had at least one base knock.

The Bears go for the sweep at 1 p.m. Sunday.
