JACKSONVILLE, Ala. –
Emma Shields' 50th-minute goal pushed Missouri State to a 1-0 victory over Jacksonville State Thursday night at the Jax State Soccer Complex, giving the Bears their first-ever win in Conference USA play.
After a tightly-contested first half where both defenses stood firm, the Bears came out aggressively to open the second period. Shields broke the deadlock with a composed right-footed strike into the top left corner off a feed from
Julia Kristensen, earning her second goal of the season and putting Missouri State in front.
The Bears' back line anchored by
Kayla Smith and
Maddie Schneiderhahn proved too strong for the Gamecocks, frustrating their attack throughout the night. Missouri State limited Jacksonville State to just four shots on goal while owning a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Reilly Heman led the attack with three attempts, while Shields and
Elena Bartak each tested the keeper with shots on goal.
With another disciplined defensive performance, Missouri State secured its second consecutive clean sheet, marking goalkeeper
Ella Becker's fourth shutout of the season. The program's unbeaten conference streak extends to 22 matches, a run that dates back to October of 2022.
"This is a moment everyone in the program will cherish and remember for a long time," head coach
Kirk Nelson said. "Getting our first win in the new conference, along with a shutout and our first goal, is a huge testament to the hard work this team has put in all year. We are looking forward to our next challenge on Sunday. Go Bears!"
Missouri State (4-5-2, 1-0-1) returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 28, with a third straight CUSA road matchup. The Bears square off with Kennesaw State at 11 a.m. (CT) before starting a four-game conference home stand.
