The Starting Lineup
- Missouri State softball stays on the road as the Bears head south for a three-game series at Texas State from March 7-8. The Bears and Bobcats will play a doubleheader on Friday, before closing the series with a single game on Saturday. MoState begins the season with 20 games away from its home in Springfield.Â
- Kasey Griffith is in her first season at the helm of the Bears program, and she collected her first career win with a 6-0 victory against Tulsa on Feb. 14 in the I-10 Border Classic. Griffith was named the seventh head coach in the history of the program on June 5, 2024, and this marks her first time serving as a head coach. The Dallas Center, Iowa, native has been on the MoState staff for the last two seasons, including serving as associate head coach in 2024.
- Griffith stepped into the lead role following the retirement of longtime head coach Holly Hesse at the conclusion of the 2024 season. Hesse owned a 922-889-2 career record in 36 seasons as the leader of the Missouri State softball program.Â
- The Bears were picked to finish sixth in the MVC Preseason Poll, while Kayla Ulrich was a Preseason All-Valley Team selection at first base.
- The 2025 MoState roster includes 12 returners, nine newcomers (seven freshmen, two transfers) and features 12 underclassmen. From last year's squad, the Bears had eight departures which included seven seniors.Â
- After turning in a stellar freshman campaign in 2024, in which she led Missouri State and the MVC with a .361 batting average, Ulrich (So., Sullivan, Mo.) is off to a strong start in 2025. She leads the Bears with a .327 batting average, 17 hits and a .397 on-base percentage.Â
- McKenzie Vaughan (Sr., Bella Vista, Ark.) is getting back into the swing of things after missing the entire 2024 season due to an arm injury. In last weekend's tournament at Arkansas, Vaughan batted .375 (6-for-16) with three doubles and three RBI. She also added two hits, two RBI and a home run on Monday at Central Arkansas. She was a 2023 first-team All-MVC selection and NFCA All-Region third team selection as a sophomore.
- Vaughan and Makenzi Swick (Jr., Stillwater, Okla.) have accounted for 76.0 of Missouri State's 97.0 innings innings pitched this season.Â
- Alexis Perales (So., Grapevine, Texas) ranks 40th nationally in caught stealing by, as she has thrown out five runners on the basepaths this season.
- Missouri State has been in a lot of close games to begin the season. Seven of the Bears' 15 losses on the year have come by two runs or less.Â
- MoState enters the weekend ranked 36th in NCAA Division I in Strength of Schedule, which is the third highest in the MVC. The Bears have faced seven power conference opponents accounting for nine games on their schedule.
Missouri State is 1-2 all time against Texas State. All three previous contests were held at neutral site locations, so this will mark MoState's first trip to San Marcos, Texas. The last time the two teams met was on February 17, 2007 at the Crowne Plaza Classic.Â
MoState's lone win in the series came on March 8, 1991 at the Texas A&M Invitational.Â
