Janson, Johnson Win Individual Bronzes on Day 3 of MVC Championships

February 28, 2025

WAUKEE, Iowa - Missouri State won two bronze medals on Day 3 of the 2025 Missouri Valley Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championships at Waukee Community School District Natatorium on Friday. Lana Janson won bronze in the 200-yard freestyle and Cabrini Johnson took third place in the 100-yard breaststroke. The Bears still sit in third in the team standings with seven events to go.

Janson took bronze in the 200 free with a time of 1:48.43 to mark Missouri State's first individual medal of the championships. The junior had the second-fastest time in the prelim session (1:48.52) behind Little Rock's Olivia Elgin (1:48.11). Elgin took the silver medal in the final behind Indiana State's Claire Parsons. Last year's MVC Freshman Swimmer of the Year won gold with a time of 1:47.83.

Janson reached the podium in the event for the second straight season after finishing second in the 200 free at last season's championships in Evansville.

After winning her heat race during the prelim session in the morning, Johnson backed up her gold medal in the 100-yard breaststroke last season with a bronze this year at a time of 1:01.05. The podium performance marked her 11th career MVC medal in her five years at Missouri State and her second bronze this week after getting third in the 200 medley relay alongside Janson.

The Bears brought good swims from the morning prelim heat races into the finals session. Samantha Roemer started the day by winning her prelim heat in the 100-yard butterfly (53.85), good for third-fastest of the session. The decorated fifth-year senior finished fourth in the final with a time of 54.27. Southern Illinois' Celia Pulido broke her own conference record from the prelim session in the final, putting up a new marker of 52.25.

Caitlyn Friebe also won her prelim heat race in the 100-yard backstroke (54.92), which was also third-fastest of the six heats. Like Roemer, Friebe also finished fourth in her final with a time of 55.32 to hold off UIC's Georgina Bell by 0.06 seconds. Bell's time (55.38) was the exact mark Friebe swam to finish fourth in the event last season as well.

Fresh off a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley on Thursday, Olivia Sala matched last year's fifth-place results in the 400 individual medley. The sophomore did so with a personal best time of 4:22.52, breaking her previous best that she set on two different occasions in last year's MVC Championships and last November's House of Champions Invitational.

MoState ended the night finishing fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Friebe, Janson, Roemer and Makenzie Kurre turned in a time of 1:31.81 for the fifth-fastest 200 free relay in team history. Northern Iowa won the event with a time of 1:30.74.

The final day of the 2025 MVC Women's Swimming & Diving Championship begins with the prelim session on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. CT. The finals of each event will start at 6:00 p.m. CT. All sessions of the championships can be viewed on the UNI Athletics YouTube channel.
