The Ten Count
  • Missouri State concludes its three-game home stand Sunday when the Bears host Northeastern (Okla.) State at Great Southern Bank Arena (2 p.m.). The game features a $10 ticket special with all children 12 and under admitted free. A pregame Surplus Sale will take place in the west concourse, starting at 12 Noon.
  • The Riverhawks have been members of the MIAA since 2012-13, a league the Bears were charter members of (1912) until moving to Division I in 1982-83.
  • Michael Osei-Bonsu (Sr., Bolingbrook, Ill.) ranks 14th nationally (1st in CUSA) in FG percentage (.660). He also ranks 9th nationally in fouls drawn per 40 minutes (8.8), 17th in FT attempts per 40 minutes (14.1) and 27th in offensive rebounds per game (3.67). In Conference USA, he is 2nd in offensive rebounding, 3rd in double-doubles (2), 5th in steals (2.00), 7th in rebounding (7.7) and 8th in scoring (14.7).
  • KenPom ranks the Bears No. 9 in Division I in FTRate (52.8), a "Four Factor" metric that represents a team's ability to get to the line (=FTA/FGA). MSU is shooting 67.3 percent at the stripe this season and has recorded more free throw attempts than its opponents in all 6 games. The team is also getting 28.3% of its scoring from the FT line, which ranks 14th nationally and tops in CUSA, while its 26.5 free throw attempts per game ranks 49th among all Division I squads (3rd in Conference USA).
  • Keith Palek III (Woodbine, N.J.) ranks No. 62 among American-born players in presence rate (18.17) (by NatStat). More tangibly, he ranks 5th in CUSA in defensive rebounds per game (5.33), 6th in scoring (16.5) and 8th in assists per game (3.7). He is also the Bears' top 3-point shooter this season (10-for-31).
  • Kobi Williams (Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) ranks 2nd in CUSA (91st nationally) in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.00).
  • This year's MoState team truly values the basketball, ranking 84th on KenPom in steal turnover percentage (.084), while the Bears also rank 80th in turnover margin (+3.0) and 85th in fewest turnovers per game (10.8).
  • Zaxton King (So., Lawrence, Kan.) ranks 12th nationally in percentage of team minutes played (92.5). He is averaging 11.5 points per game this season (13.5 over the last two games), ranking 22nd in CUSA in scoring.
  • Missouri State has guarded against the three-point shot exceptionally well so far this season. The Bears rank 73rd nationally in defensive 3-point FG percentage (.292), while allowing its opponents to score just 23.4 percent of their points from beyond the arc (28th), according to KenPom.
  • Bears head coach Cuonzo Martin is coming off his 500th career game as a head coach in the Nov. 24 home game against Long Island. The milestone came just over 17 years after his head coaching debut with the Bears at Auburn (11/14/08). Martin is 54-21 (.720) all-time at Great Southern Bank Arena.
Coach Cuonzo Martin
  • After an extensive national search, Missouri State University announced Cuonzo Martin as its men's basketball head coach on March 27, 2024. The man who orchestrated Missouri State's only MVC regular-season championship run during his first tenure in Springfield originally coached at Missouri State from 2008 to 2011.
  • Martin has a 276-224 (.552) career record in his 16th seasons as a Division I head coach with experience at MSU, Tennessee, California and Missouri. His teams have made 9 postseason appearances in that span, including 4 trips to the NCAA Tournament, 4 appearances in the NIT, and a CIT title with the Bears in 2010.
  • Coach Martin is 73-67 (.521) in his fifth season (and second stint) at Missouri State, including 54-21 at home, 14-40 on the road and 5-6 at neutral sites.
  • Martin also  boasts 59 college graduates during his career with stints at MoState, Tennessee (2011-14), California (2014-17) and Missouri (2017-22).
  • A native of East St. Louis, Ill., Martin was a star player at Purdue from 1991-95 for coach Gene Keady and then played four years professionally. He was on the coaching staff at Purdue for eight years under Keady and Matt Painter before accepting his first head coaching position at MSU on March 26, 2008.
  • In Martin's first stint in Springfield (2008-11), he was named Missouri State's 16th head coach in time for the program's 100th anniversary season and its inaugural campaign at Great Southern Bank Arena. In his second season (2009-10), Martin guided MoState to a 24-12 overall ledger, a 19-2 home record, and an impressive run to the CIT Postseason Tournament title.
  • His third season at MSU (2010-11) was one of the program's most memorable, as the Bears finished 26-9 overall on the way to its first-ever MVC regular-season title with a 15-3 league record. The Bears fell to Indiana State in the finals of the MVC Tournament in St. Louis and capped an unforgettable campaign by advancing to the second round of the NIT. Martin was named 2011 MVC Coach of the Year and recipient of the Ben Jobe Award as the nation's top minority head coach. Over Martin's last two years at MoState, the Bears were 35-3 at home and did not lose a non-conference home game.
  • Martin's return to MoState in 2024-25 featured a roster packed with 15 newcomers for the Bears' final season in the Missouri Valley. MSU's 9-23 overall record was not a fair representation of the club's season performance which included 14 single-digit losses -- which was tied for the fourth-most in the nation.
