Bears Drop Midweek Contest at SEMO, 5-3
May 07, 2024 | Baseball
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – A pair of Cody Kelly home runs accounted for Missouri State's offense Tuesday in a 5-3 loss at Southeast Missouri State, as the Bears played their 33rd true road game of the season to tie the program's high-water mark set in 2003.
Â
SEMO (26-23) scored twice without benefit of a hit in the second inning after loading the bases with walks, scoring the first run on a wild pitch and the second on an errant throw attempting to retire the lead runner at home.
Â
Kelly's first home run left Capaha Field in the third inning and a 72-minute rain delay followed with the Bears trailing 2-1.
Â
Upon resumption, neither offense mustered much momentum until the Redhawks used three singles, a walk and a hit batter in the seventh inning to score three times for a 5-1 lead.
Â
Missouri State (19-29) answered in the eighth as Tyler Epstein hit a leadoff single and Kelly followed with a two-run shot, his 11th of the season. Nick Rodriguez walked later in the frame to extend his reached base streak to 29 games.
Â
Eight different MSU pitchers combined to hold SEMO to four hits but issued seven walks. SEMO's seven pitchers combined to strike out 18 Bears.
Â
The Bears stay on the road for a Friday-Sunday series at Belmont (22-26, 9-12 Missouri Valley Conference).
