SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State women's soccer team claimed its second unbeaten conference season in as many years with its 3-0 win over Valparaiso at home on Sunday.
Camielle Day recorded her ninth shutout of the season for the Bears (11-4-3, 9-0-1 MVC) to reach a career total of 28 and a new program record. The previous record of 27 was held by Jackie Jasper (2005-08). Day is one shutout short of tying her season record of 10 which she set last season.
MoState opened scoring in the 19
th minute with a game-winner from
Lillie Rasmussen.
Kaeli Benedict set up
Julia Kristensen for a shot the bounced off the crossbar. Rasmussen got the rebound to score her third goal of the season and her first career game-winner.
Carly Raunig was a few minutes behind with her first goal of the season in the 27
th minute. A corner kick from
Grace O'Keefe was sent up by
Riley Smith when Raunig was able to get underneath it and head the ball into the top of the net and passed Valpo's Kate Sheridan.
The lone goal of the second half came from Kristensen when she sent a rocket into the back of the net and cause Sheridan to go flying. Benedict and O'Keefe set Kristensen up for her sixth goal of the year.
Kristensen wanted to score a goal over the team that knocked the Bears out of the 2023 MVC Tournament. The senior led the team in shots with five total, two on-goal. Rasmussen was right behind her with four shots and three on-goal. The Bears tallied 26 shots total with 11 on-goal. The Beacons only took two total shots and none on-target. Twenty-six shots in a match ties the season-high set by the Bears in their 5-2 win over UIC exactly two weeks ago (10/13/24).
MoState clinched its first-ever Missouri Valley Conference regular-season crown with a 1-0 win at Illinois State on Thursday. Along with the title, it has secured the No. 1 seed, a double bye for the tournament and hosting rights for the semifinal and final rounds of the MVC Tournament, November 7 and 10 at Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium.
"Proud of this team," head coach
Kirk Nelson said. "They fought through a very tough nonconference schedule and took those lessons into a tough conference schedule. To come out of top overall and finish strong in our final game is a testament to our grit, focus and execution at a high level. It is definitely a time to celebrate this massive accomplishment but that will be very brief, as we now need to get ready for the conference tournament here and keep battling! Also a huge shoutout to
Camielle Day for breaking the all-time shutout record today!"
The Bears will begin their fight for their fourth MVC Tournament title on Nov. 7 at 6:00 p.m. Tickets will be available for purchase at the gate on game day.
