Bears Down Sycamores in Four Sets

SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State tied a season high with 12 blocks and rallied after dropping the opening set Friday evening for a 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-23) Missouri Valley Conference victory over Indiana State at Hammons Student Center.

Azyah Green led the way with a season-high eight stuffs, while Morgan Sprague and Maddy Bushnell added four apiece as the Bears improved to 7-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Sprague added a season-high 43 assists along with three kills and nine digs.

On the offensive side, freshman Breanah Rives hit .233 with 16 kills and was joined in double figures by Bushnell (11) and Deja Bickers (10). Both teams ended with 50 kills and 22 errors, and the Bears held a slight .206-.189 lead in efficiency.

Teagan Polcovich tallied 20 digs – her eighth match of the year with 20-plus – and the Bears led 65-52 in that category.

The Sycamores (2-11, 0-3) used a 9-1 run midway through the first set to lead 14-8, then scored five straight after the Bears closed to 17-16 to put it away.

The Bears used a 7-1 run to lead 12-8 in the second set and slowly pulled away, then used three aces and two blocks in the third to overcome a 14-10 kill deficit for the victory.

MoState watched a 15-9 lead slip away in the fourth and trailed 23-21 before closing on a 4-0 run. Rives got things started with a kill, an ISU error made it 23-23, Bushnell landed an emphatic kill for match point and Sprague served the Bears' eighth ace of the night to clinch it.

The Bears continue their five-match home stand with Evansville (6-8, 1-2) at 4 p.m. Saturday. The Purple Aces lost 3-1 at Southern Illinois on Friday.
