
Seniors Shine for Bears at Season Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Senior Kayla Pfitzner posted a top 10 finish and fellow senior Johanna Wollenhaupt finished in the top 20 as the duo paced the Missouri State women's golf team in its season opener. As a team, the Bears slid from fourth to seventh in Tuesday's (Sept. 12) final round of the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial at Rivercut Golf Course, posting a 306 after shooting 292-293 in Monday's opening 36 holes for 891 for the tournament.
Pfitzner placed fifth in the tournament, firing 72-73-70--215, one-under-par, while Wollenhaupt carded 72-74-74--220 to finish 17th. Freshman Tierney Baumstark shot 77-74-75 to tie for 32nd in her first collegiate tournament. Sophomore Kiser Pannier was fourth for the Bears and 38th overall with 73-74-81--228, one better than sophomore Lilly Whitley, who tied for 42nd after posting 80-74-75--229. Junior Helena Bel and freshman Kyleigh Pfitzner tied for 47th with 230 totals, and freshman Rylie Andrews shot 79-78-83--240 to tie for 72nd.
Oral Roberts claimed the team title, shooting 295-282-291--868 for an eight-stroke win over runnerup Austin Peay, which tallied 290-287-299--876. California Baptist placed third with 880, one better than Wichita State and its 881. UTEP and Oklahoma City tied for fifth, one better than the Bears with 890. Wyoming and Creighton were eighth at 892 and Houston Christian rounded out the top 10 in the 17-team field with 896.
The Bears are idle next week before returning to action Sept. 25-27 at the Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia, Mo.
