Bear Golfers Bayou Bound to Open Spring
February 09, 2023 | Women's Golf
The Missouri State women's golf squad opens its 2023 spring campaign Sunday (Feb. 12) in New Orleans, La. at the Tulane Classic presented by Chad Brownstein. It's MSU's first-ever trip to the event, which features 18 teams and is contested at English Turn Golf & Country Club, former site of the PGA Tour's New Orleans event from 1989 thru 2006.
Teams will play 18 holes each day Sunday thru Tuesday (Feb. 12-14), with tee times off both nines each day. In addition to the Bears, the competitive field includes Boston College, Cal Poly, Central Arkansas, Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, Howard, Incarnate Word, Iowa, Memphis, Purdue, Rutgers, South Dakota, Southern Mississippi, Texas El Paso, Tulane, Wichita State and Arkansas State.
MSU is coming off a roller-coaster fall season which saw it post a tie for first place, a runner-up and fourth-place finish, but two other finishes in the bottom half of tournaments. Individually, the Bears are led by senior Abby Cavaiani, who posted a 74.67 scoring average in the fall to pace the team. She's already a four-time all-conference performer and former conference medalist and Golfer of the Year. Cavaiani is backed up by junior all-conference selection Kayla Pfitzner, who averaged 75.47 in the fall, and senior Faith Belmear, the reigning Missouri Amateur champion who compiled a 75.93 mark in the fall. Senior Arielle Keating and freshman Kiser Pannier, who led the Bears in three of their five fall outings, will round out the lineup for coach Kevin Kane in his 21st season at Missouri State.
