Volleyball Bears Power Past Aces on the Road

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Missouri State topped Evansville in four sets Friday and earned the all-important season sweep of the Purple Aces with a 25-23, 26-24, 20-25, 25-23 victory inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse.

Azyah Green hit .429 with a season-high 15 kills, Maddy Bushnell hit .323 with 13 kills, and Deja Bickers had 14 kills for an offense that hit .211 over the course of the two-hour, 37-minute match.

Freshman Neele'ge' Sims served a career-best four aces and classmate Brooke Eslinger tallied a career-best 14 digs. Morgan Sprague dished out a season-high 45 assists to go with 14 digs for the double-double, while Teagan Polcovich (15) and Katie Wemhoener (10) also had double-figure dig totals.

Missouri State (11-13, 5-7 Missouri Valley Conference) trailed much of the opening set before Lindsay Lahr and Sims teamed for a block and a 21-20 MSU advantage. The Purple Aces (8-16, 3-9) scored the next three for a 23-21 lead, Sims struck again with an ace for 24-23, and Lahr followed by combining with Green for the winning block in a 4-0 closing run. Lahr had four kills and two blocks in the set.

The Bears hit .474 with 19 kills in the second set but still needed to rally from 17-13 down to win in extra time. MoState pulled even at 24 on its fifth try serving for the tie, then Bickers and Sims paired for consecutive blocks for the victory. Bickers also had seven kills in the set, while Evansville served five aces.

A 6-0 Evansville run gave the Aces an 11-5 lead in the third set that grew to 21-12 before a 6-0 MSU run made things interesting, but the Bears' 10 attack errors were too much to overcome as UE extended the match.

Sims served two aces in a 3-0 start for the Bears to the fourth set and the Bears led wire-to-wire, extending the margin to four points at 19-15. Evansville spoiled a pair of match points before Green's 15th kill finished off the win.

The Bears visit Indiana State (3-19, 1-11) at 4 p.m. Central on Saturday. The Sycamores lost 3-1 at home to Southern Illinois on Friday.
