September 04, 2022 | Women's Soccer
TULSA, OKLA. - Gracie English's two first-half goals propelled Missouri State women's soccer (2-3-1) to a victory here Sunday over Oral Roberts, 2-1.
"It is so exciting to score my first collegiate goals and get the win today," junior forward/midfielder English said. "I'm proud of our team for bouncing back and getting the result."
The match began with fireworks on both sides, as the two teams traded scoring opportunities early on. In the 22nd minute, English struck first for the Bears and scored, with freshman forward Joey Fosnow registering the assist.
Less than 10 minutes later, lightning struck again for English, as she found the back of the net on a great pass by junior midfielder Abby Couch.
At the start of the second half, the Bears kept the momentum and picked up five shots within the first 12 minutes. However, Oral Roberts (3-2-1) responded in the 69th minute with a goal of its own to make it a 2-1 match.
The Bears were up to the task and held their one-goal lead for the rest of the match to secure the hard-fought road victory.
"Getting a road win against a quality opponent is massive," head coach Kirk Nelson said. "Full effort from the entire team to go up two goals and finish it off."
Aside from the goals from English and the assists by Fosnow and Couch, other Bears filled up the stat sheet. Freshman midfielder Gabbi Schlapper had three shots, all of them on goal, and freshman midfielder Abby Hansen picked up two shots, with one on goal.
The Bears will stay on the road for their matchup on Thursday at 3 p.m. in Jonesboro, Ark. against Arkansas State.
