Baseball Bears Take Series with 16-5 Win Over SEMO

Season Statistics

SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State led 4-0 after 11 pitches Sunday and never looked back in a 16-5 victory over visiting Southeast Missouri State at Hammons Field. The Bears (10-8) claimed the series from the Redhawks (14-5) with the win while scoring at least 16 runs for the third time this season.

Drake Baldwin drove in Spencer Nivens and Will Duff with a two-run double in the first and Dakota Kotowski followed with a two-run home run for a 4-0 lead in the blink of an eye. Kotowski's 10th round-tripper of the season put him in double figures in the second-fewest games in school history, trailing only Jason Hart, who hit his 10th of the 1998 season in game 16.

Missouri State scored a trio of two-out runs in the third, with Grant Wood's RBI single and Mason Greer's two-run base knock doing the damage after both hitters faced 0-2 counts.

Baldwin added a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 9-0, and the Bears scored five more in the fifth courtesy of a two-run homer from Greer, two-run double from Baldwin and Kotowski sac fly. Greer finished 4-for-5 with a career-high four RBI, while Baldwin was 4-for-5 and tied his career high with six batted in.

SEMO got on a board with a two-run homer in the sixth, ending a 26-inning scoreless streak for the MSU bullpen, and tacked two in the eighth on one in the ninth.

MSU freshman Carlos Vasquez picked up his first hit as a Bear in the sixth, a two-run double for a 16-2 lead.

Jake McMahill made his Missouri State debut on the mound, striking out two and allowing one hit in two innings. Forrest Barnes (3-1) did the bulk of the work for the bullpen, fanning six Redhawks and giving up one hit, SEMO's home run in the sixth.

The Bears continue their homestand Tuesday with a 3 p.m. game against Saint Louis. Tickets are $3 for all 3 p.m. weekday games this season.
