WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Missouri State swimming and diving rounded out day two action here at the Purdue Invitational Thursday evening.
Â
After the second day, the women's team holds onto fifth place with 203 points, while the men's squad sits in fifth out of seven schools with a score of 226.5. With the exception of one school on both sides, all programs currently placed ahead of MSU are members of Power Five conferences (Louisville, Purdue and Northwestern).
Â
On the women's side, a pair of swimmers set their lifetime-best marks in their respective events.
Samantha Roemer finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly finals, recording a career-fastest time of 54.32, while
Ainsley Jenkins notched her career-best mark in the 200-yard freestyle finals, registering a time of 1:51.99 that nearly topped her preliminary time by two seconds (1:53.88).
Â
"I am excited my work is paying off," Jenkins said. "It was my first drop in a couple of years, and I couldn't be happier. I can't wait to build it up for conference action."
Â
"The 100-fly is my favorite to compete in, so I was really happy to see a best time in that event tonight and move my way up to fifth," Roemer added.
Â
The men's team was headlined by swimmers
Brayden Goeldner, Nick Schuster,
Pawel Krawczyk and diver
Logan Schelfaut. In the 100-yard breaststroke finals, Schuster recorded his season-best time (54.92), landing him in 11
th. The 100-breast proved to be memorable for the Bears, as Goeldner recorded his fastest career time in the finals (55.84), finishing 17
th.
Â
"It was nice to finally see a best time in my 100-breast after struggling to drop in that event during my senior year of high school," Goeldner said. "I'm proud to say my hard work and awesome coaching staff have helped me get to the next step in my swimming career."
Â
"I'm very happy that I was able to race and move up in my heat tonight against a tough level of competition," Schuster added. "Taking both the positives and negatives from my race, I'm excited to start the next block of training with my eyes set on conference championships."
Â
Additionally, in the 200-yard freestyle finals, Krawczyk snagged a third-place finish, posting a time of 1:36.59.
Â
"I was positively surprised," Krawczyk said. "I went into the race with no expectations, only with a will to compete. As it turned out, it paid off with an almost best time. It's a good sign before tomorrow's 200-fly."
Â
In diving, Schelfaut earned a score of 249.80 in three-meter diving action to finish ninth.
Â
"Getting adjusted to the level of competition here has been tough, but I was able to reflect on my dives from prelims today in order to perform strongly in finals," Schelfaut said.
Looking ahead, MoState concludes the Purdue Invitational on Friday morning, with swimming preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. EST at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
