Men’s Soccer Secures Seventh Shutout of Season in 2-0 Defeat of Belmont

SPRINGFIELD –
Lewis Green's fifth goal of the season was the difference maker Sunday afternoon, as the Missouri State men's soccer team defeated Belmont, 2-0, to remain unbeaten in the Missouri Valley Conference.

The Bears and Bruins came out even-keeled, trading possessions through the first 30 minutes of Missouri State's 10th match of the season. In the 30th minute, a well-placed corner kick by Zack Hargreaves gave Green a golden opportunity, as the senior defender tapped it past the Bruin goalkeeper to give MSU the 1-0 lead.

After the break, the Bears' defense continued to keep the Bruins at bay, thwarting their scoring efforts while outshooting them 10-3 in the second period.

With time winding down, MSU delivered its knockout punch. Off an assist from Jesus Barea, Aadne Bruseth netted his fourth goal of the season in the 88th minute to increase the Bears' lead to 2-0 and hand Belmont (5-2-4, 2-1-2) its first loss in seven games.

"It was great to get another win and stay undefeated in the MVC," said Bruseth. "I just want to thank the lads, the coaches and all of the supporters that we have for a great win today."

The win was the team's seventh shutout of the season and second-straight, moving MSU's record to 7-1-2 on the year and 3-0 in the conference.

"Ten days ago, we challenged the guys to defend better and not to give up so many goals, so two shutouts in a row is fantastic," said head coach Michael Seabolt. "If the guys keep doing that, we're going to win a lot of games because we know we can score."

MSU continues its season next weekend when the team plays only its second road match of the year against new Valley member, the University of Illinois Chicago on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 12 p.m.
