CARBONDALE, Ill. – Missouri State was shut out by Southern Illinois for the second consecutive game Sunday afternoon at Itchy Jones Stadium as the Salukis completed the four-game Missouri Valley Conference sweep of the Bears with a 5-0 victory.
After Southern Illinois (31-12, 10-10 MVC) grabbed a 2-0 lead with a single, double and two RBI ground outs in the second, Missouri State junior right-hander
Jared Viertel settled in, tossing a career-high seven innings and yielding two runs on three hits.
Viertel retired the final 14 Salukis he faced and did not allow a hit after the second before giving way to the bullpen after seven innings. The Salukis used two singles, two doubles and a wild pitch to add three insurance runs in the eighth for a 5-0 lead.
The Bears (15-15, 5-7) put runners on the corners in the second, fifth and eighth innings but were unable to capitalize on any of those chances.
Drake Baldwin paced the offense with a pair of doubles, and
Cam Cratic's eighth-inning single extended his streak of reaching safely to 16 games.
SIU starter Ben Chapman (6-4) struck out nine and gave up five hits in 7.2 innings.
Missouri State concludes its 10-game road trip Wednesday with a 6 p.m. game at Kansas.
