Prime Nine
1) Missouri State closes out the regular season at Hammons Field with a four-game set against Valparaiso. This weekend's unusual start times with Valpo - 11:30 a.m. Thursday, 10 a.m. Friday and 11:30 a.m. Saturday - are in place because of additional home games scheduled for the Springfield Cardinals those same dates. MSU can still be seeded anywhere from 5-8 at next week's MVC Tournament in Carbondale, Ill, putting them in Tuesday's single-elimination round to advance to the six-team double-elimination portion of the bracket.
2) Saturday will be Senior Day at Hammons Field, when Missouri State honors the four players who returned for their additional year of eligibility -
Jack Duffy,
Logan Geha,
Ben Whetstone and
Logan Wiley - as well as
Matt Russell, who will graduate this summer. Geha and Whetstone already earned their MBAs on May 14.
3) Sophomore catcher
Drake Baldwin enters the Valpo series on a 20-game hit streak that began April 3 against Bradley. Baldwin is 26-for-73 (.356) during the streak, MSU's longest since Aaron Meyer hit in 20 consecutive games from March 5-April 5, 2016. The last longer streak was 29 games by Kevin Medrano in 2010.
4) Missouri State's current .977 fielding percentage is on pace to break the single-season record of .976 set in 2015. The Bears improve that number to .981 in MVC play, and the starting infield of
Grant Wood,
Walker Jenkins,
Mason Hull and
Ben Whetstone have combined for only five errors in 20 league games. MSU ranks 11th nationally and first in the MVC by turning 0.95 double plays per game.
5) Logan Wiley's start Thursday will be the 40th of his career, moving him to seventh in school history. His 257.2 innings pitched rank 10th.
Jack Duffy enters the VU series ranked sixth in MSU history with 220 games played.
6) Missouri State is 16-5 when scoring at least three runs this season and 9-0 when scoring in the first inning.
7) Head coach
Keith Guttin picked up his 1,300th career victory on April 13 at Missouri. Guttin's troops beat the Tigers 7-5 in Columbia, and the 39th-year coach currently ranks fourth among active coaches and 19th overall in career wins.
8) The Bears have five victories this season in their final at bat. MSU won in 10 innings on March 30 at SEMO, and has walk-off wins on April 1 against Bradley (
Cam Cratic bases-loaded HBP), April 2 vs. BU (
Mason Hull single), April 6 versus Drury (
Drake Baldwin home run) and May 7 versus Indiana State (Hull single). MSU's last four home victories have come in the bottom of the final inning, with the last win not falling into that category happening March 16.
9) Ben Whetstone ranks 8th nationally by drawing 1.00 walks per game.
