
MSU Men’s Swimming and Diving set for MAC Championships

SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State men's swimming and diving team will close out the 2020-21 season Thursday through Saturday (April 9-11) at the Mid-American Conference Championships in Oxford, Ohio.
The Bears will try to defend their 2020 MAC title at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center on the campus of Miami of Ohio. Missouri State will be challenged by Ball State, Evansville, Miami (Ohio) and Southern Illinois.

Bear Bites
- MSU is looking to go back-to-back as they won a MAC Championship in 2020 after a dominant performance which featured seven individual wins and one relay win. Overall, the Bears totaled 892 points over four days.
- Michael Claunch has been a force for the Bears on the boards recording zone-qualifying marks on both boards this season. As a result of his efforts, Claunch was named MAC Diver of the week twice (Jan. 21, March 24).
- The last time out back on March 19-20, MSU picked up to wins over Xavier, 126-91, 126-106 in a meet that took place in Terre Haute, Ind.
- In diving action against Xavier, the Bears swept both boards as Michael Claunch won both boards (300.00 1-meter, 312.00-meter), Trevor Fisher finished second (248.25 1-meter, 266.47 3-meter) and John David Spence finished third (245.25 1-meter, 243.68 3-meter). Jimmy Doromal picked up the win in the 200 breaststroke with a personal-best 2:02.22 while finishing second in the 100 breaststroke (56.74).
- Freshman Dylan Moffatt has burst onto the scene for MSU winning seven individual events this season while also earning a NCAA B-cut after swimming a MAC best 15:08.07 back on Feb. 28 at Mizzou.
- Senior Michael Hampel will be a serious contender in the breaststroke as he holds top-three MAC times in all-three breaststroke events. He was a gold medalist in the 100 breaststroke and 400 medley relay at the 2019-20 MAC Championships. He also was a silver medalist in the 200 breaststroke and 200 medley relay.
- Arthur Cury was impressive last time at Indiana State on March 19-20 as he won the 200 free (1:38.62) and 200 IM (1:50.07). Cury holds MAC best times in the 200 Free (1:36.75) and 200 IM (1:47.44).
- Pawel Krawczyk has been solid this season as he swam a MAC best-time of 4:23.38 at the Notre Dame Shamrock sessions on Jan. 16. Krawczyk also has top-three times in the 200 free (1:37.83), 1000 free (9:21.96) and 1650 free (15:39.36). The Warsaw, Poland, native will be looking to defend his MAC gold medals in the 500 free and 800 free relays.
- As a freshman, Jonathan Hill was part of the 2019-20 MAC gold medalist 800 freestyle relay team and stepped to the podium in the 200, 500 and 1650 free events.
- All-MAC returnees include Arthur Cury, Claunch, Hampel, Hill, Krawczyk and Lewis.

Coach Dave Collins

- Dave Collins (Drury, 2005) is in his 10th season as Missouri State head coach.
- Collins garnered and MAC Coach of the Year honors in 2019-20.
- Under Collins watch, the Bears have won three MAC championships.
- Last year, Collins engineered an unforgettable campaign, the MSU men were dominant at the MAC Championships, claiming ten conference champion citations throughout the meet. Standout senior Antonio Thomas was recognized as the MAC's Co-Swimmer of the Year and Most Outstanding Senior. Michael Claunch earned his second trip to the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships to represent the Bears on the 1-and-3 meter boards.
- As head coach, Collins and the Bears' staff have produced 16 All-MAC first teamers.
- Academically, with team GPAs of 3.0 or higher, both Bear squads have annually earned CSCAA Scholar All-America team honors.
- Since his arrival at Missouri State, the Bears have broken every men's record in the non-freestyle events.
- Collins has taken the Bears' recruiting efforts to new heights. He and his coaching staff are responsible for signing Missouri State's first top-100 recruit: 2012 Olympian Uvis Kalnins of Latvia. CollegeSwimming.com listed Kalnins as the No. 68 overall swimmer in the 2012 recruiting class.
- Before becoming head coach, Collins served as an assistant for four seasons at Missouri State under MSU Hall of Famer Jack Steck.
