BROKEN ARROW, Okla. -- The Missouri State women's golf team posted its best round of the season Monday (Apr. 12), sparked by a career-best individual performance, and sits just four shots out of the lead and in contention at the ORU Invitational with 18 holes left to play.
Brooke Newell posted a career-best three-under-par 68 in the afternoon round to go with an even-par 71 in the morning for a 139 total that gives her a whopping seven-stroke lead entering Tuesday's final round. The junior from Anita, Iowa birdied three consecutive holes en route to a back-nine 33 at the River Course at Indian Springs Country Club.
Junior
Abby Cavaiani backed up Newell with 74-73--147 and is tied for fourth, while sophomore
Johanna Wollenhaupt is in eighth place after shooting 74-75--149. Junior
Faith Belmear is tied for ninth with 77-74--151, while another pair of Bears are tied for 15th with 154 totals --
Bridget Schulte and
Taylor Towers.
Faith Hopkins and
Allison Bray shot 156 and 157, respectively, and are tied for 22nd and 24th.
The Bears posted a season-best 290 in the second round after shooting 302 in the morning for a 592 total, placing them four shots behind Little Rock, which went 298-290--588. Host Oral Roberts is third with 608, Wichita State fourth with 622, Stephen F. Austin fifth at 628, Tarleton State sixth at 629 and Western Texas C.C. with 640.
Final round play is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday.
