Brewer’s Bears Fall in Defensive Battle

WATERLOO, Iowa – The Missouri State women's soccer team dropped a defensive battle 1-0 to Northern Iowa on Saturday afternoon.

"It was a tightly contested match and we were in it until the final whistle," head coach Rob Brewer said. "Unfortunately, a mistake in the first half was the difference. While we had some signs of life offensively, we must be better at creating scoring opportunities."

Northern Iowa (1-2-2, 1-2-0) scored the lone goal of the match in the 15th minute when the Panthers' Sandra Thiman netted a 55-yard floater that found the back of the net.

Missouri State (1-5-2, 0-2-1) struggled to generate offensive opportunities as the Bears had just three shots on goal, all of which were in the first half. Kate Schroeder led the Bears offensive attack putting two shots on goal while Anna Durnin also added a shot on goal.

MSU goalkeeper Katherine Montgomery made seven saves while allowing one goal in 90 minutes of action. Montgomery's seven saves were the most since her eight-save performance back on Feb. 28 in the Bears' double-overtime draw against Loyola.

The Panthers outshot the Bears 16-3 overall and 8-3 in shots on goal. Corner kicks came at a premium MSU and UNI had just three apiece.

The Bears will be back in action, March 19, as they host Evansville. The match kicks off at 5 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN+ or ESPN 3 pending the networks TV schedule.
