SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State volleyball team improved to 7-3 at home on the season Friday evening with a 25-17, 25-18, 25-19 sweep of visiting Southern Illinois to secure a winning record at Hammons Student Center for the 23rd consecutive season.
The Bears hit .290 as a team with four players at .333 or better, out-blocked the Salukis 9-3 and served eight aces, including a career-high five
Holly Luginbill.
Luginbill served four of those aces in an 8-0 run that put the Bears (15-13, 6-10 Missouri Valley Conference) ahead 13-4 in the first set, and Missouri State hit .360 in the period for the win.
After jumping to leads of 4-0 and 13-5 in the second, the Bears allowed the Salukis (5-24, 0-16) to close the gap to 18-17 before Missouri State finished on a 7-1 run.
Amelia Flynn had six of her 10 kills in the set while
Azyah Green added four.
The Bears trailed 5-0 in the third set and gained their first lead at 13-12 on a
Manuela Ibarguen kill. SIU scored the next point for the tie and Ibarguen added two more kills in a 5-0 run for an 18-13 advantage, and MSU led by three-plus points for the remainder of the set.
Green finished with nine kills on 400 hitting, while
Brooklyn Cink (6 kills),
Maddy Bushnell (5) and
Morgan Sprague (4) each finished without an attack error. Flynn added 10 digs for the double-double and Cink tallied a team-high five blocks.
Missouri State closes the regular season next weekend when the Bears host Indiana State at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19 and Evansville the next day at 5 p.m.
