Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker to Bradley in Five Sets
October 29, 2021 | Women's Volleyball
SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State's volleyball team went extra time in the fifth set with Bradley Friday evening at Hammons Student Center, but it was the Braves who prevailed by closing the final set on a 3-0 run for a 16-14 victory.
Bradley (12-11, 8-4 Missouri Valley Conference) won by set scores of 25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 16-14, handing the Bears (14-9, 5-6) their first five-set loss of the season in their fifth time going the distance.
The fifth set was tied 11 total times with four lead changes, with Bradley's 7-4 lead the largest for either side. Missouri State answered with a 4-0 run and the set was tied at each interval from 7-7 to 14-14. One of Amelia Flynn's 19 kills handed MSU match point at 14-13, and Bradley countered with three consecutive kills to take the match.
Hitting percentage was a key statistic as the teams alternated sets, with the winning side posting an efficiency at least 100 points higher each time, capped by Bradley hitting .400 without an error in the final period.
Manuela Ibarguen slammed a career-high 19 kills, while she and Flynn each had 15 digs to share team-high honors with Kate Owen.
Azyah Green played a part in five of Missouri State's 10 team blocks, and Brooklyn Cink hit .267 with 11 kills.
Bradley held narrow leads in attack efficiency (.211-188), kills (65-64), digs (78-73), ace (8-6) and blocks (11-10).
The Bears host Illinois State (13-11, 9-3) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Fans will be admitted free if they present a ticket from Saturday's MSU football game, and a costume contest with prizes including portable bluetooth speaker and Missouri State swag will take place.
