MSU Track & Field Starts Off Strong at Washburn Open

TOPEKA, Kan. – Two top-five finishes highlighted day one of the Washburn Open for the Missouri State track and field team as the two-day competition kicked off the Bears' 2021 season today (Jan. 29) inside the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility.

"It was fun to be in a competitive environment again and you could tell the athletes had a lot of nervous energy out there," said head coach Jordan Fife.

The MSU distance medley relay team consisting of Sierra Williams, Taylor Holtz, Edna Dar and Ashley Rolewicz took fourth in the Bears' only running event. The distance quartet legged out a time of 12:19.70, finishing right behind third-place Fort Hays State (12:19.36).

In her first event as a Bear, Brooke Jenkins recorded a mark of 5.52 meters to place fifth in the long jump. Nakaja Weaver, who also made her MSU debut today, just missed on making the finals with her leap of 5.22 meters and finished 11th. Rachel Lacey marked a jump of 4.60 meters to close out the Bears' strong showing in the long jump.

"Brooke had a solid start to her MSU career by making the final in the long jump," added Fife. "We put some people in different positions in the DMR just to get some experience and I was very pleased with the effort from all of them. We're looking forward to getting the rest of the team out there tomorrow and having some fun."

Day two of MSU's season opener begins tomorrow (Jan. 30) with the remainder of the field events starting at 9 a.m., followed by the morning session of running events at 9:30 a.m. The 60-meter hurdles (3 p.m.) and triple jump (3:30 p.m.) kickstart the meet's afternoon session.
