Bears Set to Open Spring Golf Season in Big D
January 29, 2021 | Women's Golf
After an abbreviated fall season, the Missouri State women's golf team will open its spring campaign Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 1-2) at the SMU/Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas, Texas. The Bears will be one of 13 teams in a field loaded with some of the nation's top teams, including top-ranked Baylor and 10th-rated Oklahoma State.
MSU is coming off a fall season cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic in which they competed three times. The Bears closed out the fall by posting a 52-stroke victory in their own Payne Stewart Memorial, Oct. 19-20. They also finished 10th of 15 teams at Arkansas State after opening the season by splitting a dual meet Oct. 1 at Central Arkansas in which they defeated UCA in match play, but fell in stroke play.
In their earliest start ever to the spring season, the Bears will be led by reigning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year Abby Cavaiani, medalist at the aforementioned Stewart Memorial by firing 75-71-71--217. She'll be joined by fellow sophomores Allison Bray, who was runner-up at the Stewart after a career-best 68 in the final round, Faith Belmear, Faith Hopkins and freshman Johanna Wollenhaupt.
The acclaimed Trinity Forest Golf Club, former host of the PGA Tour's AT&T Byron Nelson Classic, will serve as the host venue for the event, playing to a par of 72 at 6,319 yards.
Teams will tee off at 8:30 a.m. Monday for 36 holes of play and the same time Tuesday for the final round. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com. In addition to the Bears, Baylor and Oklahoma State, other teams in the field include Texas, Texas Tech, Kansas State, UT-Chattanooga, SMU, Memphis, Nebraska, Washington, Tulsa and UTSA.
