March 19, 2020

ST. LOUIS - Missouri State senior first baseman Ben Whetstone, along with Allison Apke of Bradley, earned a place in this week's MVC Scholar-Athlete Spotlight, presented by Enterprise Bank and Trust Company, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced Thursday.

Whetstone, a fifth-year senior from Overland Park, Kan., completed his undergraduate degree in finance this past December and is now working toward an MBA. He has twice been named to the Missouri Valley Conference's Academic Honor Roll and earned the MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award as a freshman in 2017. Whetstone also picked up MVC Scholar-Athlete Team recognition in 2018.

A three-year starter on the Bears' infield, Whetstone
is a two-time team captain who has clubbed 19 career home runs while also starring in the field, ranking as MSU's career leader in fielding percentage (.993) through the conclusion of the 2020 season. He has started 130 consecutive games at first base for the Bears over the last three seasons, and ranks among the program's top 10 defenders in putouts (1,009) and double plays turned (101) as well.

Off the diamond, Whetstone has been involved with MSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Council since his sophomore year and with Fellowship of Christian Athletes for three years, including holding a campus leadership role as vice president over the last two years.

To qualify for the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Spotlight, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.

Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes are evaluated on their campus involvement and community service.
