SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Missouri State women's golf team opened up a commanding lead Monday (Oct. 19) at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial at Twin Oaks Country Club. The Bears were slow out of the gate, though, on a cold and rainy morning as they could manage only 314, but they rebounded in the afternoon with 295 for a 609 total, well ahead of second-place Omaha, which posted 323-322--645.
The Missouri State White team is third with 334-316--650 and Drury turned in 333-327--660. This year's tournament was postponed from its traditional September date due to the Covid-19 pandemic and reduced from an original field of 17 down to four.
MSU also is dominating the medalist race with sophomore standout
Abby Cavaiani leading the way after shooting 75-71--146, four over par in two trips around the par-71, 6061-yard layout. Teammates
Allison Bray and
Bridget Schulte are tied for second, seven shots back with 153 totals; Bray posted 81-72 and Schulte 76-77. Sophomore
Faith Hopkins is fifth after carding 79-77--156, one ahead of teammate
Faith Belmear, who shot 85-72--157. Junior
Niamh Lendrum rounds out half a dozen Bears in the top 10, sitting in eighth place at 84-77--161.
Sophomore
Brooke Newell shot 86-78--164 for the Bears, while
Kayla Pfitzner had the same total on rounds of 84-80. Freshman
Taylor Towers checked in with 85-84--169 and
Wriley Hiebert had 90-85--175.
Tuesday's final round begins with tee times at 8 a.m.
