SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State women's cross country team travels to Augusta, Kan. for the 71st annual J.K. Gold Classic on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 9:00 a.m. MSU is one of three Division I teams that will compete in this four-kilometer race, joining Kansas State and host, Wichita State.
"We want to be as competitive as possible with the other D-I teams at the meet", says head coach
Jordan Fife. "If we can find our groups to run with, I think we'll be happy with the outcome."
MSU will send all four runners who finished in the top-15 at last year's J.K. Gold Classic to the meet on Saturday.
Grace Breiten (14:33.5) earned a fourth-place finish, joining
Jordyn Capra (14:57.8, 12th),
Erica Wollmering (15:01.5, 13th), and
Paityn Stagner (15:04.4, 15th) as the top scorers for the Bears in the 2018 meet.
The Bears look to show improvement from a week ago where they started off the 2019 campaign with two top-15 finishers in the Mizzou Opener on August 30, in Columbia, Mo. Breiten posted a personal best four-kilometer time (14:20.2) on her way to a 12th-place finish and Wollmering placed 15th with her own personal best time of 14:39.9.
"We've had really great workouts and our fitness is in good shape", adds Fife. "Putting it all together and working within our groups is what we are focused on the most for this weekend."
Missouri State will return to action in two weeks with the Missouri Southern Stampede on Saturday, Sept. 21 in Joplin, Mo.
