JOPLIN, Mo. – Missouri State women's cross country claimed the team title at the Southern Stampede on Saturday, Sept. 21 in Joplin, Mo. The Bears (100) had three top-25 finishers to edge out Cal State East Bay (101) for the program's first team title since a 2013 top finish at the Hurricane Festival.
MSU finished atop the team standings, beating out 28 other schools by posting scores of 5-15-21-28-31 in the five-kilometer interdivisional meet.
"Coming out on top today is a big win for our program", said head coach
Jordan Fife. "We got out and established ourselves early in the race and were able to hold our positions."
Grace Breiten led MSU in the first five-kilometer race of the season, finishing in 6th with a time of 17:41.4.
Edna Dar knocked almost a minute off of her personal best time, running 18:03.4 on her way to a 17th place finish.
Erica Wollmering posted her third straight top-25 finish for the Bears with a time of 18:14.6 in a meet that featured 283 runners.
Shelby Palmer (33) and
Adyson Delaney (36) rounded out the scoring for the Bears as they turned in personal best times of 18:28.2 and 18:32.9, respectively.
"Today's result is a great way to prove to our team that all of their hard work and dedication has paid off", said Fife. "We are on the right path and are looking forward to the next opportunity to go out and compete."
Next up for Missouri State is a trip to Fayetteville, Ark. for the Chile Pepper Festival on Oct. 5 with the five-kilometer race set to begin at 10:20 a.m.
