SPRINGFIELD – A sweltering afternoon couldn't spoil the Bears' red-hot offensive streak as Unnur Bergsdottir found the net halfway through the first to clinch the 1-0 shutout for the Missouri State women's soccer team Sunday at Betty & Bobby Allison South Stadium.
MSU's shutout marked its third-straight win and extended its unbeaten stretch to six. The Bears (5-1-1) have not faltered since the season opener at Western Illinois on Aug. 23.
Murray State's Miyah Watford created early trouble for the Bears, firing off a shot that sailed high in the opening minutes. Watford's chance was the only one for the Racers in the first, as MSU's defense limited their offensive production.
Bergsdottir broke through in the 17th minute, dribbling a pass from Jordan Eickelman and launching a straight shot past the Racers for the 1-0 edge. On an afternoon where temperatures topped in the mid-90s, both squads recorded sluggish starts, combining for only four shots in the opening period.
Led by Watford, Murray State's (3-5) offense sparked with six shots in the second. Kaitlin Maxwell hauled in a pair of key saves in the final four minutes to snuff out a Racer comeback and collect her second shutout of the season. She finished the afternoon with three saves.
Bergsdottir's goal provided the only on-target shot for MSU in the contest, with Kennady Orlick and Eickelman also finding scoring chances.
MSU concludes its home swing Wednesday, Sept. 18 against Saint Louis at 7 p.m.
