SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State ran into an efficient Southern Methodist team Friday afternoon at Hammons Student Center, falling 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-23) to the Mustangs in the MSU Fall Invitational.
The Mustangs (6-1) used an early 6-0 run to gain control in the first set, hitting .467 without an error to take the 1-0 lead.
Missouri State (3-6) jumped ahead 4-1 in the second period and withstood SMU tying the score numerous times until the visitors broke through with a 7-1 run to lead 21-17. MSU rallied to a 24-22 deficit before SMU won with a kill.
The Bears overcame a 7-1 deficit in the third set thanks to a pair of
Leah Vokolek aces during a 6-0 run for an 18-16 advantage. The Mustangs countered with a 4-0 run to lead 23-20, the Bears twice closed within a point, but SMU answered each time.
Sarabi Worsley-Gilbert hit .545 with 13 kills for the Bears, who owned a .223 attack efficiency as a team compared to .351 for SMU. The Mustangs led 45-35 in kills, 42-29 in digs, while each team had six aces and five blocks.
Vokolek served a career-high three aces to go with 11 digs, and
Azyah Green had a match-high four blocks.
MSU concludes the weekend with two matches Saturday, playing Dayton at 12:30 p.m. and Weber State at 7:30 that evening.
