SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State's volleyball team closed out its second home tournament of the season Saturday with a 3-0 loss to Dayton in the afternoon match followed by a five-set defeat at the hands of Weber State in the nightcap.
Weber State went 3-0 in the MSU Fall Invitational to claim top honors, and the all-tournament team consisted of WSU's Rylan Roberts (MVP), Sam Schiess and Hannah DeYoung, Rachel Woulfe and Hannah Jacobs of SMU, Dayton's Maura Collins, Missouri State's
Sarabi Worsley-Gilbert, and Peyton Williams of Kansas State.
The Bears play their final non-conference weekend Sept. 20-21 at Ball State, where they will take on the host Cardinals, Wright State and Austin peay.
Dayton Recap (UD won 25-12, 25-19, 25-18)
Dayton hit .386 as a team while the Bears never hit higher than .105 in any of the three sets in a comfortable win for the Flyers.
UD hit .529 in the first period, pulling away with a 7-1 run to 20-10, and the Bears got no closer than three points after falling behind 10-4 in the second set. The Flyers used a similar blueprint in the third, jumping ahead 14-7, and, after the Bears closed to 14-11, opened the margin again with a 7-1 run to 20-12.
Sarabi Worsley-Gilbert led MSU with nine kills and
Chloe Rear had six, and the Bears hit .079 as a team. Dayton led 42-26 in kills, 38-25 in digs, 5-2 in aces and 8-3 in blocks.
Weber State Recap (WSU won 22-25, 25-14, 17-25, 25-19, 15-9)
Missouri State had a season-high 15 blocks, with
Azyah Green's 10 representing the most by an MSU player since
MacKenzie Irwin in the 2018 opener, but Weber State dominated the final two sets for the comeback win.
The Bears never trailed in the first set with five blocks and 18 digs to hold the Wildcats (7-2) to .095 hitting, but the visitors rebounded to hit .550 in the second period to even the match.
Missouri State (3-8) jumped ahead 7-2 in the third set and grew the lead to 11 points as late as 20-9 before the visitors clawed back to 21-17. The Bears closed with three consecutive blocks from Green to finish with seven in the set as a team.
The Bears fell behind 9-4 in the fourth set and never recovered despite cutting the margin to a single point on four separate occasions, and watched WSU start the fifth set on a 3-0 run and finish with five blocks while holding MSU to a negative hitting percentage in the final frame.
Sarabi Worsley-Gilbert finished with a match-high 13 kills,
Aubrey Cheffey added 12, and
Chloe Rear had 11 to go with 14 digs for the double-double.
Leah Vokolek had 23 digs and three aces.
