SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State women's soccer team tallied five goals for the first time since 2017 in a dominating 5-1 win over non-conference foe Tulsa at Betty & Bobby Allison South Stadium Friday night.
After a scoreless first period, the Golden Hurricanes struck first as Averee Dubach snuck one past the Bears' defense in the 54
th minute to take the 1-0 advantage.
Eight minutes ticked off the clock before
Jordan Eickelman leveled the score, 1-1, in the 62
nd minute off a chip shot that sailed past an out-of-box Tulsa goalkeeper. Three minutes later,
Unnur Bergsdottir fired off the go-ahead goal with assistance from
Ashley Coonfield and Eickelman.
Tulsa looked the even the score, launching back-to-back shots in the 68
th minute, with the first counting as a save for
Kaitlin Maxwell and the other falling left of the goal. The Golden Hurricanes tallied nine shots in the second, but were unable to match the Bears (4-1-1) productive offense.
MSU's scoring barrage continued as
Lauren Fisher tapped in another goal in the 75
th minute from just inside the box to extend the Bears' margin, 3-1.
Kennady Orlick got in on the action for the Bears, rounding out the outstanding offensive efforts with a pair of goals in the 79
th and 82
nd minutes, signaling the first two of her sophomore campaign and tying her alongside Bergsdottir, Coonfield, and Eickelman for the team-high.
MSU converted on five of its seven shot attempts in the second, combining for 12 chances throughout the one-sided contest.
The last time MSU scored five goals was on Sept. 10, 2017 at SIUE, resulting in an identical 5-1 mark. Then-freshman Eickelman and sophomore Coonfield each dished out a goal in the impressive road outing in which the Bears scored five unanswered after SIUE took a 1-0 lead.
Up next, the Bears continue their home stretch, hosting Murray State Sunday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m.
