SPRINGFIELD – Behind a scrappy defensive effort and a historic triple-double from sophomore
Chloe Rear, the Missouri State volleyball team knocked off a Power Five school for the sixth consecutive season Thursday evening with a 3-2 victory against visiting Kansas State at Hammons Student Center.
Rear notched her second triple-double of the season with a career-high 18 kills on .417 hitting, 15 assists and 10 digs, recording the most kills in a triple-double at MSU since Susan Ruch had 25 against UNI in November 1989. Rear also had four blocks and four aces, as the Bears (3-5) won by set scores of 18-25, 25-23, 13-25, 25-17 and 16-14 on the opening night of the MSU Fall Invitational.
Sarabi Worsley-Gilbert added 15 kills on .324 hitting to the offensive effort,
Laynie Dake equaled a career high with seven blocks, and
Leah Vokolek had 22 digs.
After alternating wins and losses through four sets, Kansas State (4-3) was poised to continue the trend in the fifth, bolting to leads of 6-2 and 10-7. Rear's ace capped a 4-0 MSU run to 11-10, and the Bears earned match points at 14-13 on
Azyah Green's kill and 15-14 on another from Dake before converting on a K-State error.
Kansas State out-dueled the Bears' offense in the first set, owning a .438-.344 advantage in attack efficiency, and Missouri State jumped ahead 9-2 in the second period and held on after the Wildcats fended off four match points.
The visitors hit .433 in the third set for a comfortable win, and Rear gave MSU the lead for good in the fourth with two aces and a kill during a 4-0 run to a 10-8 advantage. It was still a two-point margin until
Aubrey Cheffey powered two kills in a 4-0 run to 21-15, and the Bears continued to pull away from there.
Missouri State trailed 59-55 in kills and .265-.239 in attack efficiency, but owned leads of 61-60 in digs and 12-6 in blocks. Each team served seven aces. Â Â Â Â
