Volleyball Bears Split on Day Two of Wynn Invitational

SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State's volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday at Hammons Student Center, defeating Southeast Missouri in the nightcap after suffering a heartbreaking five-set defeat at the hands of DePaul in the afternoon match.

The Bears (2-1) finished second in the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational, placing Laynie Dake and Amelia Flynn on the all-tournament team. DePaul (3-0) won the event, headlined by tournament MVP Isabelle Banez, Brittany Maxwell, and Donna Brown, while SEMO's Laney Malloy and Sydney Bolding of Jacksonville also earned all-tournament recognition.

Missouri State begins a four-match road swing Tuesday with a 6 p.m. match at Oral Roberts.

DePaul Recap (DePaul won 20-25, 24-26, 25-22, 25-15, 16-14)
Chloe Rear recorded the first triple-double at Missouri State in seven years, but the Bears let a 2-0 lead slip away as the Blue Demons turned up their defense in the last half of the match.

Rear finished with 10 kills, 10 digs and 37 assists, and Amelia Flynn added 19 kills and 11 digs for the double-double, as Missouri State hit .319 over the first two sets.

MSU hit .406 in the first period and had five blocks to overcome a 14-9 deficit, and rallied again in the second, with Rear landing one kill for set point and another for the 26-24 win.

The Blue Demons, who finished 3-0 in the tournament to claim the championship, had the majority of their 14 blocks over the next two periods, limiting the Bears to a .114 attack efficiency to force a deciding set.

In the fifth, the Bears led by as many as three points at 11-8, and were up 13-11 before DePaul used a 3-0 run to earn match point. Flynn evened the score at 14 with a kill before the Blue Demons took the final two points.

MSU hit .192 compared to .162 for the visitors and led 64-53 in kills. Each club had 72 digs and 14 blocks. Leah Vokolek's career-high 27 digs led all players. Laynie Dake matched a career best with seven of MSU's 14 blocks, while Aubrey Cheffey and Azyah Green had five each. Dake also hit .321 with 11 kills.

SEMO Recap (MSU won 25-23, 25-16, 23-25, 25-15)
Senior Aubrey Cheffey recorded her first career double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs, Laynie Dake hit .346 with 14 kills and six blocks, and Chloe Rear finished two kills shy of her second straight triple-set in a four-set win against Southeast Missouri.

MSU trailed from the start in the first set before Alyssa Doucette had three kills and a block during a 5-0 run for a 15-all tie. Kennedee Anderson's ace gave MSU its first lead at 18-17, and the Redhawks fought off four set points before Azyah Green won a joust at the net for the victory.

The Bears pulled away from a 6-6 tie in the second, growing the margin to as high as 15-8, to take a 2-0 match lead, and led only one time (22-21) in the third before SEMO closed out that set to extend the match.

In the fourth, the Bears hit a blistering .375, starting off with a pair of Amelia Flynn aces and never trailing.

Missouri State dominated statistically, leading .216-.115 in hitting percentage, 56-40 in kills, 57-46 in digs and 11.5-8 in blocking. Flynn had 14 kills, Leah Vokolek scooped 19 digs, and Green had five blocks.
