TULSA, Okla. – Missouri State continued its early-season trend of lengthy matches Tuesday at Oral Roberts, and owned a 2-1 set lead before an 18-7 run over the final two periods propelled the Golden Eagles to a 3-2 victory at Cooper Aerobics Center.
The volleyball Bears (2-2) were tied with ORU at 18-all late in the fourth set when the Golden Eagles (3-1) closed that set on a 7-1 run before bolting to an 11-6 lead in the final period.
Missouri State rallied to even the fifth at 11-apiece on an
Aubrey Cheffey kill, and owned a pair of match points at 14-13 and 15-14 before ORU closed with three straight scores for the 19-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-19, 17-15 victory.
The Bears served 10 aces on the night, their most since Sept. 8, 2017, but committed 17 service errors and hit just .159 as a team.
Chloe Rear and
Emelie Orlando each served a career-high four aces, and
Amelia Flynn finished with 15 kills and 15 digs for her third double-double of the year.
Laynie Dake hit .333 with nine kills and five blocks for MSU, while
Aubrey Cheffey,
Azyah Green and
Sarabi Worsley-Gilbert had eight kills each.
Leah Vokolek led the Bears with 16 digs.
Missouri State held ORU to a negative hitting percentage in the first set for the comfortable win, but allowed the Golden Eagles to hit .212 or better in each of the final four periods. The Golden Eagles took advantage of 10 MSU attack errors in the second set to even the match, while the Bears hit .371 with 18 kills in the third set.
The Bears head to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Classic in New Orleans on Friday and Saturday to face Tulane, Ole Miss and Houston Baptist.
