Braves' Late Barrage Extends Bears’ MVC Skid

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Bradley's offense erupted for 14 runs over the final three innings to overcome another three-run deficit against Missouri State, wrapping up a Missouri Valley Conference series victory with a 16-9 win over the Bears Saturday afternoon at Hammons Field.

After being held to two runs on seven hits by MSU starter Logan Wiley over the first six innings, the Braves bombed the Missouri State bullpen with a late onslaught that included four different multi-run homers and nine unanswered runs to end the contest. Most notably, BU erased a 5-2 deficit with a five-run seventh, cashing in on five walks and a two-out, three-run double by Andy Shadid to claim a 7-5 lead.

MSU (13-29, 4-7 MVC) responded with a four-run seventh, retaking the lead on Ben Whetstone's two-out, three-run shot to right-center. But Bradley answered with a pair of two-run blasts from Brendan Dougherty and Connor O'Brien to grab an 11-9 advantage.

The Braves, who erased a three-run, ninth-inning deficit to claim Friday's series opener, homered two more times in the ninth Saturday, using a two-run round-tripper from Luke Shadid to stretch their lead to four runs, before Andy Shadid capped the scoring with a three-run bomb.

Allan Beer locked up the victory and his seventh save of the season with 2.0 scoreless innings. Andy Shadid led the BU attack with a 3-for-5 day and six RBIs, while Dougherty also turned in a three-hit afternoon.

The Bears, who dropped their sixth-straight MVC contest, scored in three of the first four innings to overcome an early 2-0 deficit and build a three-run cushion. Dakota Kotowski delivered the first of his two run-scoring singles in the second, before the Bears scored two times to gain their first lead of the day in the third. John Privitera doubled with one out and came around with the tying run on a Drew Millas two-bagger to right. After drawing a walk and moving to third on the Millas double, Jack Duffy stole home for the second time this season to make it a 3-2 game.

Kotowski came through with another run-scoring hit in the fourth, then plated his third baserunner of the game with a fielder's choice bouncer in the sixth.

Wiley was in control over the final four innings of his afternoon after BU scratched out single tallies in the first two frames. The junior fanned eight Braves without issuing a walk, working out of jams with critical strikeouts in two of his final three innings of work.

Kotowski and Whetstone each delivered a pair of hits and three RBIs apiece, while Privitera and Logan Geha each added two hits for MSU.

Up next, the Bears will look to salvage the final game of the series, which is slated for an 11 a.m. first pitch Sunday (April 28).
