Starting Five - Storylines for the Weekend
1) The Lady Bears (17-8, 13-1 MVC) are tied atop the league standings and are 16-1 since Dec. 16. This is the fourth MSU team to start 13-1 in conference play, and first since 2004. This is the second time in league history and first since 1985 that two teams reached 13-1, meaning that Sunday's game with Drake will have major MVC title implications. MSU currently controls its own destiny to a regular season championship, and won the first meeting with both UNI and Drake.
2) The Lady Bears are 20-1 in their last 21 Valley games and 28-4 in league play the last two seasons. MSU's average score in league contests the last two seasons is 74.0-59.3. In league games this season, MSU leads the MVC in scoring defense (58.6), 3-point defense (.275), rebound margin (+10.9), offensive rebounds (14.3) and turnover margin (+5.21). The MSU defense has been at its best in the first half, allowing an average of 26.6 points in the opening 20 minutes of Valley contests. UNI, meanwhile, ranks second behind the Lady Bears with a 61.1 defensive average in MVC games.
3) MSU is 14-1 in its last 15 home MVC games, dating to Jan. 7 of last season. Each of the 14 wins came by double digits, and the Lady Bears own a plus-21.1 scoring margin, plus-10.8 rebound margin, and .479 field goal percentage in those 15 games.
4) The Lady Bears have won the rebounding battle 22 times in 25 games this year, and rank in the top 30 nationally in rebound margin (+8.4) and both offensive (.381) and defensive (.743) rebound percentage. MSU's rebound margin is the second-best in school history, behind only the 1975 club at plus-9.9.
5) Missouri State has made more free throws than the opposition in 15 of the last 16 games, making 204 foul shots in Valley games compared to 170 total attempts for opponents.
Wynn Celebration Weekend
Missouri State will celebrate the life, leadership and legacy of Dr. Mary Jo Wynn the weekend of March 1-3.
