FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Missouri State women's cross country collected a 12th-place finish (390 points) at the 31st annual Chile Pepper Festival here on Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Bears rounded out the top-10 among Division-I teams in the five-kilometer race which featured 27 teams and 270 runners. This year's Chile Pepper Festival featured a new race format with the meet being split into two separate races due to the large number of teams competing.
"We still haven't run up to our full potential yet this year, but we are getting closer in some spots", said head coach
Jordan Fife. "Our depth is the best it's been in several years, but with a couple of scorers out today we needed more people to step up."
Grace Breiten was the first MSU runner to cross the finish line, placing 33rd with a time of 17:28.3. She has been the top finisher for the Bears in three of the four meets on the season after pacing MSU at the Mizzou Opener on Aug. 30 and at the Southern Stampede on Sept. 21.
Edna Dar was the second finisher for the Bears in back-to-back meets, posting an 18:13.9 mark to place 87th. Running for the second time at the Chile Pepper Festival, Dar shaved 42 seconds off of her time from last year's race.
Adyson Delaney (18:21.7),
Shelby Palmer (18:27.2), and
Lindsey Biesemeyer (19:02.1) each turned in personal best 5K times to close out the top-5 finishers for the Bears.
"It was good to see Grace run her best race of the season", added Fife. "We had a solid effort from our 2-4 runners and Lindsey stepped up and finished off the scoring for us which helped a lot."
MSU continues the October slate with its first 6k race of the season at the Under Armour Pre-National Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 12:15 p.m. in Terre Haute Ind.
