SPRINGFIELD – A second-half goal from Illinois State spoiled the Missouri State women's soccer team's senior day, as the Redbirds pulled away late for the 1-0 decision Friday night at Betty & Bobby Allison South Stadium.
MSU (9-4-2, 3-2-1 MVC) topped the Redbirds offensively in the first half, launching three shots in the opening 20 minutes.
Kyli Jackson's on-target chance in the 28
th minute sparked another Bears' attack, but a pair of saves and a blocked shot kept MSU off the board, keeping it a scoreless affair heading into the break.
The Bears' defense had a stellar first half, not allowing a single shot from the visiting club.
Illinois State (12-5, 5-1 MVC) responded quickly in the second, forcing back-to-back shots within the beginning five minutes of the half. Multiple Redbird shot opportunities ultimately led to a goal as offensive powerhouse Kate Del Fava broke the deadlock in the 64
th minute, handing Illinois State the 1-0 advantage.
Senior forward
Ashley Coonfield tried to even the tally for the Bears down the stretch, launching a shot to the bottom left that was snuffed out by Illinois State's Haley Smith. Coonfield and
Kennady Orlick paced MSU's offensive efforts with two shot apiece.
The Redbirds outshot MSU 12-9, seeing all 12 of their attempts occurring in the latter half. Constant pressure from the opposing side kept Maxwell busy in-goal as she picked up six saves to close the Bears' final home swing of the regular season.
MSU wraps up its regular-season on the road at Indiana State on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 4 p.m.
