TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Jordan Eickelman's 47th-minute goal punctuated a comeback performance for the Bears as the Missouri State women's soccer team scored two unanswered and outlasted Indiana State, 2-1, in both clubs regular-season finale at Memorial Stadium Thursday evening.
Despite the frigid conditions, Indiana State's (3-11-2, 1-5-1 MVC) Jensen Margheim capitalized on the home advantage in the opening minutes, taking a pass from Sidney Ewing and placing it between the frames for the 1-0 lead.
Less than five minutes ticked off the clock before
Anna Durnin leveled the field for the Bears (10-4-2, 4-2-1 MVC), prevailing in a scramble at the net and tapping it past the Sycamores' goalkeeper for the 1-1 tie just over 10 minutes into the midweek match.
Both offenses continued to contribute throughout the first half, as the Bears and Sycamores combined for 19 shots in the beginning 45 minutes. Neither club was able to replicate its earlier success as they headed into the break at an even 1-1.
The Bears made its shot opportunities count in the second, as Eickelman converted on one of MSU's two second-half shot attempts in the 47
th minute, outmaneuvering a Sycamore defender and burying the go-ahead for the 2-1 edge. The goal marked Eickelman's fourth of the season, tying her alongside
Kennady Orlick for team best.
MSU rode a quality defensive performance from
Kaitlin Maxwell, who snuffed out a season-high 10 saves in the road win. Six of those came in the latter half as Indiana State cleared nine shots compared to the Bears' two.
The Sycamores doubled MSU in scoring chances, 20-10, but the Bears' stellar defensive effort kept the home club at bay and capped their tenth victory of 2019. Durnin and Orlick combined for over half of the Bears' opportunities.
"Proud of the team tonight," said head coach
Rob Brewer. "They showed immense determination despite the brutal weather and were able to respond and claim the win."
MSU secured a home game in the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Soccer Championship quarterfinal round and will find out seeding and opponent Friday afternoon.
