SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State women's soccer team picked up its third Missouri Valley Conference win in a dominant 2-1 effort against UNI Saturday afternoon at Betty & Bobby Allison South Stadium.
After scoring the lone goal in MSU's midweek match at Evansville,
Kennady Orlick picked up right where she left off, converting on the Bears' first shot with help from
Ashley Coonfield's corner kick at the seventh minute mark to put the home club ahead 1-0. The go-ahead marked her second score in as many games as she leads the Bears with a team-best four goals.
MSU (9-3-2, 3-1-1 MVC) continued on the offensive as
Jordan Eickelman and
Anna Durnin scattered a combined three shots in the ensuing 20 minutes. The Bears defense held tough throughout the first, keeping the Panthers (5-9, 1-4 MVC) to only four shot attempts.
Ashley Coonfield provided some breathing room for MSU in the 60
th minute, firing a long ball that sailed just above UNI's goalkeeper and landing in the net to double the Bears lead, 2-0. She, along with Eickelman and Orlick, paced MSU's offense all launching two shots apiece to combine for six of the Bears' 10 opportunities.
UNI's Lizzie Mewes answered in the 77
th minute, finding the right corner to slice it to a one-goal game late in the second.
Both clubs' offenses stalled down the stretch, but the Panthers suddenly threatened in the closing seconds as a shot by UNI's Sydney Hayden sailed within inches of the crossbar.
MSU narrowly outshot the Panthers by a 10-9 margin, keeping UNI's goalkeeper busy with six of those falling on-target.
Up next, the Bears conclude their final regular-season homestand against MVC leader Illinois State on Friday, Oct. 25 at 5 p.m. Â
