IOWA CITY, Iowa - Missouri State goalkeepers Kate Lewis and Victoria Spahn combined for seven saves Sunday afternoon. But Iowa scored twice in the opening 27 minutes and generated 27 shots on the afternoon to push past the visiting Bears, 3-0, at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
Missouri State moved to 2-4-1 on the season, while Iowa State – which is receiving votes in this week's USCA Poll – improved to 5-1-1.
Iowa opened the scoring just 2:57 into the match when Sara Batchadji sent a cross into the area that Reilly Heman headed toward the center of goal. Lewis got her hands to the attempt but could not keep it out, giving the Hawkeyes an early 1-0 advantage.
The Hawkeyes continued to apply pressure with four corner kicks inside the opening 10 minutes. Lewis responded by turning away three shots over a span of less than two minutes midway through the half.
Iowa doubled its lead at 26:47 when Elle Wildman set up Berit Parten, who connected on a first-time effort with her left foot and drove the finish into the upper-right corner.
The Hawkeyes carried the 2-0 advantage into halftime after recording 19 shots, six on goal and 10 corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes. Lewis made four saves in the period.
Missouri State limited Iowa to eight shots after the intermission, down from 19 in the opening half, but the Hawkeyes added to their lead at 65:06. Parten started the sequence with a pass to Lucia Englund, who found Kylie Cino on a run through the middle of the penalty area. Cino connected with her right foot and slotted the finish into the bottom-left corner to make it 3-0.
Missouri State's lone shot came in the 72nd minute when Marleigh Allen got behind the Iowa defense and tried to lift a shot over goalkeeper Braelynn Galt. The attempt carried just over the upper-right corner.
Spahn replaced Lewis in goal at 73:02 after Lewis finished with five saves. Spahn stopped both shots she faced over the final 16:58, including an attempt from Englund in the 86th minute.
Missouri State concludes its three-match road swing Thursday (Sept. 10) when the Bears travel to Kansas City to face the Roos (0-4-1) at Durwood Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
