Women’s Soccer Comes Up Short at Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Lillie Rasmussen put three of her four shots on goal, while Missouri State held an 11-6 advantage in total attempts Thursday evening. But Kansas City goalkeeper Anika Patton made five saves as the Roos capitalized on goals from Ashley Koch and Olivia Platt to push past the visiting Bears, 2-0, at Durwood Soccer Stadium.

The Bears slipped to 2-5-1 with the setback, while Kansas City improved to 1-4-1.

Rasmussen generated two early chances for the visitors, forcing Patton into a save in the 13th minute before testing her again on a Bears counterattack at 16:19. Rasmussen finished with three first-half shots, putting two on frame.

Kansas City broke through at 19:47 after capitalizing on a Missouri State turnover. Koch won possession and combined with Platt before collecting the return pass and finishing a breakaway from 10 yards into the lower-right corner to put the Roos ahead, 1-0.

The Bears continued searching for the equalizer and generated another opportunity just before halftime when Ariya Barton put an attempt on frame with 16 seconds remaining, but Patton made the save to preserve Kansas City's one-goal advantage at the break.

The visitors continued generating opportunities after the break, producing seven shots over the final 45 minutes. Emma Shields forced a save at 60:54 before Rasmussen tested the Kansas City defense again just over four minutes later. Marleigh Allen added another attempt on goal in the 77th minute.

Kansas City added an insurance goal at 83:26 when the Roos were awarded a penalty. Platt converted from the spot to extend the advantage to 2-0.

Rasmussen finished with a match-high four shots, putting three on goal, while Kate Lewis made two saves in 90 minutes between the posts. Patton finished with five saves for Kansas City.

The Bears return home Sunday, Sept. 20, to take on SIUE at 1 p.m. at Betty & Bobby Allison South Stadium. The match will air on ESPN+. Admission is free for fans at all women's soccer home matches.
